This weekend was my 8 year old daughter’s birthday party. Can’t believe it’s been 8 years since she was born. I remember the breakfast I had the morning she was born, the drive to the hospital, the VERY moment I first became a mom, holding her tiny and strong little body in my arms!
Parenting is an extreme education. There is truly no school for it and no way to truly prepare for it. You figure it out as you go …. You learn a lot as your kids get older and they begin to interact with more and more other kids. The diversity of personalities is eye-opening.
This is the case in really everything in life, you can never quite be fully prepared for what will happen and who you will interact with.
I believe parenting teaches far more about life than any other form of learning experience; business, a j-o-b, or the like. You learn about patience, choosing which battles to fight, when to hold your tongue, insight to character, building character, checking on your own character, believing, understanding, creating dreams, goals, following through, the power of words, the power of actions, and the power of love. These are ALL the traits you must need to interact with others, whether you’re an employee, a business owner, a manager,or single looking for a partner!
Everyday I learn more about myself. I learn that change is necessary; without it I can’t possibly ebb and flow with all the changes that constantly happen around me. I learn that being more self-less is a must; without this, there is no way I can give to those who need it. I learn to be very conscience that I was born with two ears and one mouth, to listen twice as much as I talk. At the end of the day, I become a better person. If I haven’t learned something about my family or about me, then I know I’ve missed something and I take time to reflect.
If you find yourself stressed at the end of the day, take 15-20 minutes to quiet your mind, your body, and your surroundings. Don’t think, just be. It’s like time-out for grown ups and we all need it!
