Welcome Back!!

Did you read my 1st post of this 8 part series? If not, you can read it here : First Step to Laser Focus

Goal setting how to write a mission statementRead this series in numerical order, you’ll be able to incorporate the steps into your business the way multi-million and multi-billion dollar businsses do for success year in and year out. If you want to model their success, do what they do, in the order they do it!

This article’s title is about Achieving Goals, but it’s not about goal setting. I know, a bit surprising and very unorthodox. Afterall, on January 1st of every year, every blog writer comes out with their How To Write & Achieve Goals or How To Set Goals post, regurgitating all the same steps as eachother and each year, just with a different date.

What I share with you today is taking a step back, before you write down your dreams and aspirations (unless they have to do with the 1st post in this series! And THAT had nothing to do with goal setting either!)

WHY DOES TRADITIONAL GOAL SETTING NOT WORK?

If you’re familiar with traditional goal setting, you write down your BIG, Bodacious Dream to the Stars Goals then work backwards with action steps right to today.  You do this for short term and long term goals.  Then, you visit your goals daily. And I agree with all that.

What I don’t agree with is that almost NO entrepreneur and/or new business owner does the Prep work that is essential for Goal Setting. When THIS part (along with the critical 1st step – yep – from my first post of this series) is NOT done, goals fizzle out because you don’t have anything BIG Enough to Drive, motivate, and inspire you – and no – “Your Family” is not enough. Great personal reason, but it’s personal, NOT what a business is made of. Hey – and I’m GUILTY of having been in the same shoes as you!!

Take out your goals you’ve written out this year and you’ll either discover they are aligned with your actual business mission or not, and if not, then you’ll be doing a bit of a rewrite today and, trust me, you’ll feel SO GOOD afterwards!

What is the Missing Step to Goal Setting?

If you paid close attention to the last sentence, I gave you a fat hint on the answer to the question in this section. The missing piece is a Mission – more specifically – a Mission Statement.

Wait, hold up! First, WHAT is a Mission Statement and, isn’t that only for BIG companies? Like Multi million dollar companies? I’m small, I don’t need one, right?

I’m going to answer the 2nd part of that thought first, “… isn’t that (mision statement) only for BIG companies?”
That’s a negative ghost-rider.

I’ll explain WHY that’s a No as I respond to the first part of your thought; “WHAT is a Mission Statement . . . “?

A Mission Statement, in a nutshell is your company’s REASON for existing. It’s Purpose on this Earth; the 1st post is HOW you’ll accomplish the Mission Statement. EVERY Business has a Reason for being here. WHY Did you start your business? (beyond ‘needing’ the money) No matter the size, a business exists for a reason. That reason can expand, evolve, even completely change, but there is always a reason.

BRAKES! You’re now thinking, if this is the 2nd post of the series and it’s about my company’s reason for existing and the 1st post is HOW I’ll accomplish this Mission, then shouldn’t the Mission be written first?

Well, it could, yes. But most people are Inspired and Have Aspirations TO Inspire . . . that’s why the first post is the first step.  We often have dreams of grandeur to Inspire the masses then realize, wait . . . now I need to make it happen  – WHAT IS MY COMPANY? How will people KNOW that I want to DO what I want to do?? How Will I INSPIRE AND Make money doing it? And, Voila!! A company is born!

And THAT, my friend, is where a Mission Statement comes in.

HOW TO WRITE A MISSION STATEMENT

When people think of Mission Statement they think of this long, Declaration of Independence type document that has to be thought out and go on and on and on about WHY MY BUSINESS EXISTS.

It is just the opposite and says so in its name, it’s a simple statement. Some businesses use a few sentences but for the most part, it’s ONE Statement of Purpose.

When you decide on WHY you exist, think about WHO We Are, We want to impact & HOW. It’s very much attached to the 1st post and should tie very closely together.

Here are a few examples of Mission Statements (You’ll see some familiar companies, not just because of their names but from my first post – see how these align with the examples I gave before)

Disney: “to be one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information. Using our portfolio of brands to differentiate our content, services and consumer products, we seek to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable entertainment experiences and related products in the world.

Starbucks: “to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.”

Nike: “Bring inspiration & Innovation to every athlete in the world”

Amazon: “We strive to offer our customers the lowest possible prices, the best available selection, and the utmost convenience.”

EVERY ONE OF THESE Statements tell the Customers or clients what the company stands for.

When you see a Nike commercial it inspires you to buy AND you are confident that Nike is current with innovation, that the styles and fabrics of the apparel won’t fall apart or be what was worn 20 or even 10 years ago. You KNOW Nike stands for quality!

WHY do SO Many people shop on Amazon? Because they are KNOWN for uber convenience, wide selection and fantastic pricing!  Amazon has saved me more times than I can count in saving the day with last moment gifts, sent cross country!

So what do you want YOUR Audience to think about YOU? What do you want to be known for?
